Rarely has a romantic comedy been as in love with itself as this overlong, narcissistic showcase starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as overtly winsome, unlucky-in-love gals who swap dream homes one down-in-the-dumps Christmas. Their tall tale falters under the weight of too many characters and the strain of contriving them all in a showdown but it's a lot of fun getting there. Irresistible rawhide romp about an imperialist guard from China (Jackie Chan) who whoops it up in the Wild West with an outlaw (Owen Wilson) so good-natured he makes Butch Cassidy look like Billy The Kid. John Travolta, William Hurt and Andie MacDowell star. Thereupon ensues is a joyous road movie-cum-romantic comedy with a spiritual twist that eschews the obvious and the exploitative for heaven-sent understatement and wry, quirky Americana. When three muckraking tabloid journos are sent to investigate an eccentric, small-town widow’s claim that she has an angel living in her house, they find a paunchy, chain-smoking, beer-swilling, feather-plucking hedonist with a wingspan that would do an albatross proud. He plays an aspiring comic who’s reincarnated as a detested businessman. The directors of American Pie laboriously re-work Heaven Can Wait, with Chris Rock standing in for Warren Beatty. Only surfies will get a rush out of this surfer girl drama starring Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez (TV’s Lost). Droll one-liners help to transcend the movie’s choppy, sitcom-ish plotting but it’s Curtis gusto and goofiness that make Freaky Friday such a laugh-out-loud delight. She plays a psychologist who literally winds up in her head-banging teenager’s shoes on the eve of remarrying. Jamie Lee Curtis reverts to adolescence in this familiar but funny re-make about a mother and a daughter who switch bodies. After a fantastic first half, Disturbia abruptly changes tone with a plot twist that’s too extreme to convince yet is executed with such skill it will have your heart pounding.

In this 9/11 update on Rear Window, Shia LaBeouf plays a teenager who, under house arrest for three months, resorts to spying on the neighbourhood, from the gorgeous girl (Sarah Roemer) who moves in next door to someone he suspects is a serial killer (David Morse). Hogan plays a hard-bitten croc hunter who swaps the wilds of the Northern Territory to grapple with the weird mob ways of New York City when he loses his heart to a Big Apple sheila. The first and best of the Paul Hogan trilogy was a superb spoof of Aussie machismo and urban Americana that also was an engaging commentary on innocence.
